Tre av søstrene til Maria, emigrerte til Amerika. Dette var Anna f. 1885, Julie f. 1890 og Thea f. 1893. Ola Haugtrædet, far til jentene, skal ha sagt da ei av dei reiste att han heller ville ha fulgt dei til grava enn å «sende» dei til Amerika (sitat Tea Gjeilo). Alle tre reiste fyrst til Nord Dakota for så å reise vidare saman med familiane sine til Battleford og Mervin i Saskatchewan, Canada. Frå Wells i Nord Dakota til North Battleford er det ca 90 mil.
Three of Maria‘s sisters emigrated to America. These were Anna b. 1885, Julie b. 1890 and Thea b. 1893. Ola Haugtrædet, father of the girls, said when one of them left that he would rather have followed her to the grave than «sending» them to America (quote Tea Gjeilo). All three sisters first traveled to North Dakota and then on with their families to Battleford and Mervin in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Anna skreiv i eit julebrev til Maria datert 1/12 1954 at ho hadde veldig til gikt og det var vanskelg for ho å skrive. Ho ha dde i 1954 adresse: Anna Olsen, 922 John St., no Battleford, Sask Canada.
– Thea og Anna hadde både kjærester da dei reiste, to brødre Thor og Lars Rundhaug frå Vågå. Dei havna i Nord-Dakota og Canada.
– Julie skreiv i brev til Maria 10. juli 1974 at «vor syster Annö døde ganske pludelig. Hun har vært riktig good med helsen i lang tid, om fredagen gjorde hun sit almindelige arbeide also bakte en stor kake også gjorde lit arbeid i haven. Lurdagsmorgen Klokken 6 stod hun op av sengen og spurte Olaf om å ta hende til docktoren for hun var ganske syk. de vart ferdige i all hast. da gick Annø til døren, men hun snudde runt og gik tilbage til sengerummet og sette sig paa sengen. og det var the siste. Docktoren come, men forsent.»

Julie skriv i julebrev til Maria i 1952 at ho ikkje viste at det gjekk an å gjere noko så vakkert med skutelen som det Maria hadde sendt til jul i fjor. Dei hadde hatt ei god avling, men alt var så dyrt. Dei kjørte opp til Thea «sist søndag», som var «riktig bra», men mannen Thor kunne ikkje «gjøre meget». De drakk kaffe på hjå Anna på veien hjem. «Hun er også bedre nå, men alle så sutrar dei om at der er gamle». «Jeg håper far ikke har for meget piner. det maa være sergeligt og ligge hele tiden, hvor jeg ønsker og se Lom og dere alle».
Julie (Julia) skriv i eit lengere julebrev i 1961: «vi lever nå i byen, vi ble for gamle til å bruge garden so vi mutte slutte. Vi har det rikt godt. … Vi sidder ligesom og venter paa enden he. Jeg er 71, manden er 73. Det er ikke lenge siden jeg saag Ana og Thea. Anna blir bedre for hver dag. Hun kan gjøre mere arbeide mu end hun kunde gjøre 10 år siden. Thea er oså bra med helsen nu. Hun lever da alene so hun har ikke stort og gjøre det værste er hun er alene so meget. … Jeg håper da alt er bra med dere alle der bortye. Det er nok aldrig en Jule Kveld undtagen jeg hugser paa vhorledes vi bygte hus med krakkene og ba hverandre Paa fremon. Det fyrste aar da jeg var paa Brandsar naar de bakte not godt so gave de mig lit ret som the var og da gjemte jeg det og tok det hjem til dig og Thea og guttene jeg hugser deg gråt fordi jeg kunne ikke være dere, jeg har ofte thankt paa what mrs Brandsar thenke om mig som kunde æde so meget godt som de gave mig og enda sitte ned til bordet og æte igjen.»
Julie skreiv i brev 1. juni 1966 at «jeg gik ud for en liden Kjøretur i dag med Ole Synstnes og hans Kone som ikke lever langt fra her. Hans bror Harvald lever rundt Fosberg ganske nær magnhild datter til Anne Syster».
Thea Haugtrædet Olson (28. september 1893 – 14. juli 1980) reiste frå heime i Skjåk i februar 1912 for å flytte etter systrene sine til Canada. Thor came to Milnor, North Dakota in aprox. 1910 to his sister Hedda Odegard. He moved to Canada in 1911. Thea Haugtradet came to Canada in May of 19121 and Thor and Thea were maried in May of 1913 (source Descendants of Olson).Thea vart gift med Thor/Tor Olson Rundhaugen i 1913. Thea og familien hadde adresse Boks 154, Mervin Sask. Canada. Thea vart kalla Theo eller Mrs. Olson til dagleg i Mervin. Eitt av barnabarna til Thea heitte Teya.
I Mervin Memories står dette om familien Thea og Thor Olson (skrevet i 1982):
Mr. Thor Olson was born in Vaagaa, Guidbrandsdalen, Norway on Dec. 7, 1889. He left his home at an early age and went to North Dakota, U.S.A. In 1908 he came to Canada and filed on a homestead in the Dulwich area. Mrs. Thea Olson was born in Skjaak, Norway on Sept. 28. 1893. She left her home on Feb. 27, 1912 and travelled on the Tutonic ‘ from Oslo to Liverpool, England and on to Grimsby in Canada. She travelled by train with many other immigrants. to Winnipeg and then to North Battleford. Her sister Mrs. Julie Hoover, who now resides in North Battleford, was ill and could not meet her at the train, however, the folks for whom Julie was working met her and took her to their home near Prince, Sask. They travelled by horse and buggy and attended church services at North Battleford and Scent grass before arriving home. Thea worked at this farm for the summer.
In 1913 Thea married Thor, a brother of her sister Anna’s husband Lars, at their home near Dulwich. At first they lived in a log shack on Thor’s homestead and their first son, Hoakon, was born there. About five years later they built a one-room house of lumber, closer to the road all owance. Later more rooms were added loth is structure.
They attendedge togethers and sports days with all Swedish newcomers. Church services were held occasionally at various homes. Ministers travelled by train and would stay over at homes in the district. One spring day Thor had an interesting wagon ride. He hit ched his horses to a wagon and set out. When he got to the river he found it flooding and flowing swiftly. As he crossed the river the box floated off the wagon and was carried down stream for a half mile and came to rest on an island. This left Thor stranded as he could not swim in the rushing waters. Fortunately the horses continued on and came to Lars place where they were used to going. Lars realized that Thor must be in trouble. so he went to the river crossing, tied a rope to a tree and threw the other end to Thor, who tied it to a tree on the island. Thor was then able to pull him self across the river using the rope.
Thor and Thea had a family of six children:
Hoakon married the former Clara Jacobson of Shell Lake. He passed away in March. 1979 and had been predeceased by three of their children. Eddie, Grace and Chrystal. His widow, Clara, son Arthur and two daughters Carol and Joy reside in Edmonton.
Raymond married the former Tillie Sa ler of Meadow Lake. They now live in North Battleford and have a family of three, Adrian, Deanna and Linda.
Agnes married Lynden Salte of Torquay, Sask. They had three daughters, Opal (now deceased (1982)), Rita and Joleen. Lynden passed away in 1971. In 1973 Agnes married Walley Hnatiuk and they live in Estevan.
Orland married Winnie Hibbert of Weyburn and they have three daughters – Thea, Audrey and Janis. Orland passed away in 1976. Winnie married Jack Biram of Wolesley in 1979 and they are living in Meadow Lake.
Albert married Frances Nybo of Swift Current. They have live children – son Loren, daughters Faye and Judy and twins Lois and Larry. Larry passed away only a few days old. They live in Estevan.
Lloyd marri ed Joyce Nelson of Mervin. They have a family of three boys and three girls, Warren, Lyle, Elaine, Roy, Pauline and Janet. They live on the father’s homestead (1982).
In 1952 Thor and Thea moved into Mervin. Thor passed away two years later at the age of 65. In 1964 Thea and Julie visited their homeland, they were accompanied by Agnes. Thea lived in Mervin until she passed away on July 14 , 1980.
